-18 dBFS is calibrated to the 0 VU on the analog VU meter with a 1:1 relationship. So a -12 dBFS is +6 VU

Classic VU Theme

Unlike VU meters (which average signals over ~300 ms), PEAK LED react to instantaneous peaks (microsecond response time). They lit up when the input signal peak exceeded a threshold +8 dB above 0 VU (triggers at -10 dBFS)

The sensitivity potentiometer adjusts the signal level to the VU meter, scaling its amplitude response to control how much the needle deflects (e.g., making it swing more or less) without altering its dynamic timing (ballistics)
